Excursion from Cochin



Athirapalli & Vazhachal Water falls  
The are lot of waterfalls and waterways around Cochin, generally in Kerala. These Athirapalli and Vazhachal are the well renowned waterfalls near Cochin which is 90Kms one way and two hours drive by surface, one can make a day trip to enjoy the beauty of these water falls
Kaladi 
(45Km from Cochin, 1 hour drive from city & 15minutes from Cochin Airport)
Kaladi is a famous Hindu Pilgrim centre 45km away from Kochi. The great Advaitha philosopher and Bhakthi saint of 8th century Adi Sankaracharya was born here. The international temple of Sri. Ramakrishna Advaitha and Ashram is located here.
Bhoothathankettu & Thattekad wildlife Sanctuary 
(75Kms from Cochin/ 1.5 hrs drive)
Bhoothathankettu is located at a distance of 50 kilometers from Cochin, this beautiful patch of unexplored land lies near the famous Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. This lush green haven is an ideal spot to hang out with family and unwind you in nature. There is a scenic dam situated in a vast virgin forest. The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (also commonly known as the Thattekad Sanctuary) is located in the Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern bank of the Periyar River. The sanctuary was the richest bird habitat in peninsular India, comparable with the eastern Himalaya.
Kodanad 
(50Kms from Cochin/ 1.5hrs drive)
It is located in the high ranges on the southern bank of the Periyar. Kodanad is renowned as the largest center for training elephants in South India. Elephants are specially trained here for riding and does work that human can't, like transporting logs, exploring the jungles, etc
The visiting hours are from 08:00Hrs till 17:00Hrs. Mondays are Holiday. 
Guruvayur Temple 
(110Kms from Cochin/ 2.5 hrs drive)
It is one of the most important and holiest pilgrim centers in Kerala, South India, attracting thousands of pilgrims from all over India. The Guruvayur temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. Non - Hindus are not allowed inside the temple. There we need to follow the dress code for this temple - women should wear only sari and men should wear only dhoti. 3kms from the temple is the famous Punnathurkotta (Anakottil - Elephant stable) which is one of the largest elephant sanitariums all over the world
Malayattoor Church 
(50Kms from Cochin/ 1.5 hrs drive)
It is a famous Catholic Church located on the Malayattoor hill and is dedicated to St. Thomas. Every year, thousands of worshippers embark on a pilgrimage to the shrine to take part in the annual festival of the Church, which falls during the months of April or May. It is believed that St. Thomas prayed in this sacred place.
Kumbalangi Village  
(20Kms from Cochin/30mins drive)
Kumbalangi is a small backwater village in Ernakulam District It is declared as the first model fisheries and tourism village of India, which has its own tradition and culture. Most of the villagers are engaged in agriculture and fishing. A visitor can experience a variety of village activities in Kallanchery which is satellite island of Kumbalangi. Some of the activities going around here are Coir yam processing, Copra processing, Crab Farming , Chinese net operation, Net making, Weaving Coconut Leaves, Country Boating, Casting of nets, Grouping of fish etc.
Pallipuram Fort
( 32KM North West of Cochin)
Pallippuram fort was built by the Portuguese in 1503. It is one of the oldest existing European monuments in India. The Dutch captured the fort in 1661 and sold it to the state of Travancore in 1789. This fort is situated in the northern extremity of the Vypin Island at Pallippuram. Near to this fort Munambam fishing harbor also can be seen. 
Kanjiramattom Mosque
Kanjiramattom is 30 km away from Kochi. It is believed that the mosque was erected over the mortal remains of a Muslim saint, Sheikh Parid. Another great Muslim saint, Baver is supposed to have prayed here and attained salvation.
Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple
(Open 4:00 am- 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm)
Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is one of the most celebrated Hindu shrines of Kerala. The temple is located in Chottanikkara town, 17kms away from Ernakulam. Durga Bhagavathy is the presiding deity of the temple. The annual festival here is celebrated in the month of Kumbha (February - March). 'Maasi Magam', coinciding with the full moon
Shiva Temple 
Ernakulam Siva Temple is situated in the heart of Ernakulam city and is easily accessible. The annual festival usually falls during January /February and spread over 8 days. The uthsavom (Festival) starts with Kodiyettam (hoisting of the temple flag) on the first day evening. On the seventh day there is Pakalpooram, when the deity is being taken out in procession with caparisoned elephants with Panchavadyam (Five Musical instruments) and finally terminating at Durbar Hall Ground after the famous Pandimelam (Local musical instrument) and evening colorful fireworks. On the final day around evening, in a solemn ceremony, the flag is lowered and the deity is then taken for the Arattu (holy bath) in the nearby temple tank. After that starts the famous Arattu procession with the accompaniment of Panchavadyam. The procession terminates at Durbar Hall Ground. The grand fireworks then bring the curtain down to this weeklong festival.
St. George Church - Edappally
This Roman Catholic Church was built in 595 AD in the land donated by ruler of Edappally. It is considered one among the oldest Churches in Kerala. A new Church building was constructed in 1080AD. Church is well known for the nine day feast in the month of May. Church is located 11 kilometers from the city
Basilica of Our Lady
Vallarpadam
A major pilgrim centre for Christians, Church of Our Lady of Ransom is one of the oldest European Churches in India built by the Portuguese Missionaries. The church dedicated to the Holy Mary of Vallarpadam popularly known as 'Vallarapadath Amma', is located in the middle of Vallarpadam, a small idyllic island on the Vembanad Lake, 5km north from the mainland Kochi (Ernakulam), Kerala.
